Overview:
Location: Mwayiwathu and Tikondane Centers
Date: 27th February, 2025
BACKGROUND
People from Nkalapa and Braidon Villages requested us, through their Child Protection Worker in their area Dorothy Kalako, to consider extending our support for their community-based childcare centres (CBCCs) of Mwayiwathu and Tikondane, respectively.
And it is on the basis of this request that we decided to go and conduct the assessment of the two CBCCs on this particular day.
Main Objective of this Assessment Exercise: To understand more about these two CBCCs so that we can consider whether or not it is necessary for us to take these CBCCs and put them under our supportive care.
Need for Urgent Assistance:
The urgent need for these children is food. The children have not been eating any food at their centres since the centres were established. The main causes of the food shortage in most centres is persistent hunger crisis in most families/households; and lack of donor support. And this is a bad development on the part of most of the children.
And for these children, there is likely high number of serious cases of acute malnutrition and underwieght.
So, there is need for us to urgently introduce feeding programme for these children in order to save lives of these innocent children.
Summary
The assessment of Mwayiwathu and Tikondane CBCCs aimed to determine the necessity of providing support. The most urgent need identified is food, as children at these centers have not received any since their establishment due to household hunger crises and lack of donor support. This situation poses a serious risk of acute malnutrition and underweight cases. The assessment confirmed that these centers require immediate assistance, particularly through a feeding program. The team expresses sincere gratitude to UVGI for their continued support and commitment to community-focused initiatives.
