Advocating for Childhood Immunization on Capitol Hill

The week of February 23rd, 2025, our UVGI president joined the Shot@Life Advocacy Campaign of the United Nations Foundation on Capitol Hill to advocate for global health equity in particular global childhood immunization programs.

Every 20 seconds, a child dies from a vaccine-preventable disease, resulting in 2.5 million deaths annually—nearly a third of all childhood deaths. Vaccines save between 4 to 5 million lives each year and have prevented approximately 50 million deaths between 2000 and 2019.

Each year, around 4 million deaths worldwide from diseases such as measles, polio, pneumonia, and diarrheal disease are prevented through childhood vaccination.

Through this campaign, we had the opportunity to meet with elected officials from the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate on Capitol Hill to advocate for global vaccine equity.

Supporting Global Health Immunization Programs

We are committed to global health immunization efforts to save children’s lives by:

Preventing Child Mortality from Preventable Diseases – With millions of children dying from diseases that could have been prevented, we are driven by a profound responsibility to take action and promoting a world free of preventable diseases – By engaging in advocacy campaigns, we work toward a future where no child suffers from a vaccine-preventable illness.

Amplifying Our Voices at a Critical Time

We are on Capitol Hill at an unprecedented time, making it essential to amplify our voices on key global health issues.

This week, we met with members of Congress at the U.S. House of Representatives to advocate for the causes we are most passionate about—global health and vaccine equity.

We had the privilege of joining fellow advocates in scheduled meetings to:

  • Emphasize global health as a legislative priority and advocate for equitable funding.
  • Request full funding for key appropriations subcommittees, including:

– The Labor, Health and Human Services (Labor-HHS) Appropriations Subcommittee

– The Senate State and Foreign Operations (SFOPS) Appropriations Subcommittee

– The House National Security, Foreign Affairs, and Resilience Programs (NSRP) Appropriations Subcommittee.

These committees play a crucial role in supporting global health initiatives and foreign affairs programs.

Additionally, we urged representatives to co-sponsor the bipartisan Oral Polio Eradication Colleague Letter, underscoring the critical role of continued U.S. leadership in the global fight against polio.

Our advocacy efforts are essential in ensuring that global health remains a priority, and we remain committed to pushing for policies that protect millions of lives worldwide.
