- Introduction
During the month of May 2025, UVGI successfully conducted two core activities focused on enhancing early childhood health and nutrition:
- Growth Monitoring at Tiyamike and Mwayiwathu Community-Based Childcare Centers (CBCCs)
- Introduction of the Nourish to Flourish Program at Mwayiwathu CBCC.
- Growth Monitoring Exercise
Objective:
To assess children’s growth and development, allowing for early detection of malnutrition and timely interventions.
Attendance:
- Tiyamike CBCC: 40 children screened
- Mwayiwathu CBCC: 60 children screened
- 100% attendance: at both centers
Process Overview:
- Measurement: Recording height and weight
- Assessment: Plotting data on standardized growth charts
- Analysis: Interpreting trends and identifying deviations
- Action: Recommending nutrition counseling, fortified diets, and medical referrals as necessary
Findings:
- All children demonstrated normal growth parameters
- No cases of severe acute malnutrition were reported
- Health and social welfare officials commended the children’s nutritional status
Recommendations from Personnel:
- Continue providing fortified porridge through UVGI’s feeding program
- Encourage parents to serve locally available nutritious foods (e.g., fruits, vegetables, soya)
