Our Focus Areas

Preventive Care

“We continue to treat illness rather than promote wellness. We need to promote wellness so we do not have to worry about treating illness”- Xavier Becerra, SHHS

Preventive care helps detect or prevent serious diseases and medical problems before they can become major.

  • Primary Prevention—intervening before health effects occur.
  • Secondary Prevention—screening to identify diseases in the earliest.
  • Tertiary Prevention—managing disease post diagnosis to slow or stop.

Training and education are an integral component of our health support initiatives. Our focus is educating communities and individuals on the importance of preventive care. Our health educators train and mentor health service providers in underserved communities and help individuals and community representatives acquire the skills and knowledge of detecting diseases in their early stages.

  • Annual Screening and Wellness Exams.
  • Breast Health
  • Counseling on such topics as smoking cessation, losing weight, eating healthy, sunlight exposure.
  • Mental Health Awareness
  • Substance Abuse Awareness
  • Stroke Prevention and Early Detection
  • Immunization Education

Immunization

NO ONE SHOULD DIE FROM PREVENTABLE DISEASE AND NO CHILD SHOULD SUFFER FROM DEBILITATING DISEASE THAT CAN BE AVOIDED.

Around the world, a child dies every 20 seconds from a disease that can be prevented with a vaccine (CDC).

1 in 5 children in the world does not have access to life saving immunization (UNICEF).

More than 3 million children under 5 and more than 300,000 pregnant women who die each year globally from preventable deaths.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to substantial disruptions in routine immunization programs and essential health services, resulting in a notable decline in immunization coverage. In the year 2021, an estimated 25 million children missed one or more of their basic vaccines, with 18 million not receiving any vaccination at all.

Today, vaccines stand as one of the most safe, effective methods to save and protect lives worldwide from preventable and life-threatening diseases and the most cost-effective health tools of advancing national welfare.

  • Vaccines have saved millions of lives between 3.5 million and 5 million lives each year. More children today live to celebrate their fifth birthday.
  • Vaccines eradicated smallpox and reduced many diseases like polio, measles, pneumonia, etc.
  • The Global Polio Eradication Initiatives (GPEI) is one of the Largest, most successful public-private health initiatives ever created. Since 1988, polio cases have decreased by 99.9%, and more than 19 million people are walking (WHO).
  • Investing in global immunization not only saves and improves lives of hundreds of millions of people but also contribute to the overall well-being and resilience of communities and strengthening countries’ health systems and economies world- wide.
