Overview:
Zero Water Contamination for a Sustainable Future: Advancing SDG 6- Clean Water and Sanitation
Location: Sakata Primary School, Zomba District, Malawi
On November 20, 2024, the African Harmony Collective, in collaboration with United Voices for Global Impact (UVGI), held an Environmental Conservation and Hygiene meeting with the Environmental Conservation and Sanitation Club of Sakata Primary School. The focus was on promoting zero water contamination, a concept inspired by UVGI Health Programs.
Water sources in the community, including rivers, wells, boreholes, and Lake Chilwa, are heavily polluted due to plastic waste, urination, and defecation. Urban dwellers in Zomba contribute to this crisis through improper waste disposal, severely impacting marine ecosystems. Contaminated water threatens aquaculture, as marine life ingests pollutants, leading to illnesses and disrupting ecological balance.
The Environmental Conservation and Hygiene Project at Sakata Primary School, led by the African Harmony Collective and United Voices for Global Impact (UVGI), targets young learners and the Trust Youth Club to combat water pollution in the Sakata community. Despite resource limitations, the initiative continues with a strong commitment to fostering environmental awareness and personal hygiene.
Key discussions included personal hygiene, menstrual hygiene, and sexual and reproductive health. Learners emphasized essential hygiene practices such as washing clothes, bathing, and drinking clean water. The project also highlights the importance of preserving water and preventing waterborne diseases, advocating for the provision of chlorine and Waterguard.
To enhance impact, there is a need for electronic gadgets for youth engagement and sensitization campaigns on “Zero Water Pollution.” The initiative has gained strong support from the Sakata community, local chiefs, and government officials., who commend UVGI dedication to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development in Malawi.
