Event: Nourish-to-Flourish Program: Supporting Children Through Malawi’s Hunger Crisis
Date: October 16, 2025
Location: Tiyamike CBCC/Mwayiwathu CBCC- Traditional Authority Nkagula, Malawi
Overview
The 2025–2026 school year for Malawi’s Basic and Secondary Schools began on 22 September 2025. As schools reopened across the country, many Community Based Childcare Centers (CBCCs) were unable to resume their feeding programs due to the ongoing national hunger crisis. This situation has severely affected children’s nutritional status, especially those from vulnerable households.
In Traditional Authority Nkagula, where United Voices for Global Impact (UVGI) is currently operating, many CBCCs—and even primary schools—opened their doors with no food available for learners.
UVGI’s Impact at Tiyamike and Mwayiwathu CBCCs
Despite the widespread shortage, Tiyamike and Mwayiwathu CBCCs have continued feeding all enrolled children daily, thanks to the support of UVGI’s Nourish-to-Flourish Program.
- Since the first day of the school session (22 September 2025), children have been receiving nutritious vita-meal from Monday to Friday, every week.
- During UVGI’s latest monitoring visit on 16 October 2025, both centers reported full attendance and consistent daily feeding.

- Total learners: 35

Mwayiwathu CBCC

Expected Impact of the Nourish-to-Flourish Program
- Physical Well-being
Consistent nutritious meals help prevent stunting and wasting, reducing the risk of infections and long-term health complications.
- Cognitive Development
Proper nutrition supports healthy brain development, improving memory, concentration, and learning capacity.
- Stronger Immunity
Well-nourished children have more resilient immune systems, enabling them to better fight infectious diseases.
- Long-term Health Protection
Good nutrition in early childhood lowers the risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart conditions, and obesity later in life.
- Educational Success
Children who are well fed attend school consistently and perform better academically, opening the door to greater future opportunities.
- Economic Potential
Improved health and cognitive ability translate to higher adult productivity, breaking cycles of poverty and contributing to community-level prosperity.
- Mental Health Benefits
Adequate nutrition supports emotional well-being and reduces risks of anxiety, depression, and behavioral challenges.
The Nourish-to-Flourish Program is saving lives in Ntima and Nkalapa villages. By ensuring that children at Tiyamike and Mwayiwathu CBCCs receive reliable, nutritious meals, UVGI is helping communities cope with the worsening hunger crisis while reducing cases of severe acute malnutrition. This program continues to restore hope, dignity, and health for Malawi’s most vulnerable children.
