Overview

In December 2025, United Voices for Global Impact Malawi team conducted a Health and Hygiene Orientation for 20 women caregivers representing Tiyamike and Mwayiwathu Community-Based Childcare Centers (CBCCs) in Traditional Authority Nkagula, Zomba District.

Training Objectives

The orientation aimed to strengthen community health practices by:

  • Preventing the spread of infectious diseases
  • Promoting good hygiene habits among women and children
  • Ensuring safe, clean, and healthy childcare environments

Key Focus Areas

Participants received practical guidance on:

  • Proper handwashing techniques and hand hygiene
  • Infection prevention and control practices
  • Personal hygiene for children
  • Environmental hygiene, including cleaning and disinfection of learning materials
  • Safe food handling, preparation, and storage

Impact and Benefits

The training resulted in:

  • Improved knowledge of hygiene and disease prevention among caregivers
  • Increased commitment to maintaining healthy CBCC environments
  • Reduced absenteeism among children due to improved hygiene practices
  • Better overall child health and well-being
  • Positive contributions to children’s learning outcomes through improved attendance and health

Challenges and Lessons Learned

  • Limited training duration restricted coverage of all topics
  • Inadequate resources constrained the reach and depth of the sessions

Recommendations

  • Conduct extended and follow-up trainings throughout the year
  • Increase resources to strengthen outreach and sustainability

Conclusion

The Health and Hygiene Orientation successfully achieved its objectives, equipping women with essential knowledge to safeguard children’s health and well-being. Community leaders, including the Village Headwoman of Ntima, expressed strong appreciation for UVGI’s continued support and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration for community development.

These efforts contribute to lasting improvements in health, education, and quality of life across Traditional Authority Nkagula—both in the short and long term.
